The Slabsides Trail begins at the end of Burroughs Drive near West Park, NY, offering hikers a short but engaging route through the wooded terrain of the John Burroughs Sanctuary. Starting on a clear path through hemlock forest, the trail climbs moderately over rocky terrain, with a few steep sections that may require careful footing. At an early junction, stay left to head toward Slabsides, the rustic cabin built by naturalist and writer John Burroughs. After visiting the cabin and reading the interpretive signs, hikers can continue along various connector trails to extend the route or complete a full loop through the sanctuary’s forested ridges.
Along the way, expect shaded groves, seasonal streams, and frequent bird activity, especially in the spring and fall. A few overlooks provide partial views across the Hudson Valley. While the route is accessible year-round, conditions can be muddy or icy outside of the summer months, and ticks are common in warmer seasons. Dogs are allowed on leash, but there are no reliable water sources—plan to bring your own. The trail’s highlights lie in its blend of local history, quiet woodlands, and short but rewarding climbs.
