Description
From Rte. 127, turn onto Gott Ave and look for the parking area on the righthand side (south). After paying the parking fee (Memorial Day weekend - October 31), head north back toward Gott Ave, looking for the Halibut Point Overlook Trail which heads into the park. Following the trail through the woods, you'll arrive at the old fire tower and Visitor's Center at the south side of Babson Farm Quarry. This hike heads around the quarry in a counter-clockwise direction, though variations are possible and all trails can be traveled in any direction. From the north side of the quarry, find the wide spur that continues north toward the shoreline where you'll find sweeping views across the ocean and north along the Massachusetts and New Hampshire coastlines. On a clear day, visitors can spot Mt. Agamenticus, 80+ miles north in York, Maine. Beware of shifting rocks and observe all signage.Loop back around the quarry or head out in a different direction to explore more of the surrounding area before returning to the Visitor's Center and the main parking area.
History & Background
Part of the Cape Ann granite industry, which peaked in the 19th century to become the second-largest industry behind fishing.
