Begin the route from the Patmos Road parking area, with the option to first cross the road for a short walk on Kestrel Trail. This brief spur leads to a picnic bench with a scenic salt marsh overlook before returning to the main trailhead. From there, follow Professor Chandler’s Long Walk heading northeast through flat, open habitat. At the second major junction, turn left onto Appy’s Way, which climbs a low knoll with panoramic views of tidal marsh and salt pannes.
Turn left again to rejoin Professor Chandler’s Long Walk, then quickly turn right onto Hickory Trail. This section traces the edge of the marsh through coastal oak-hickory woodland. After completing the loop, turn left on Professor Chandler’s Long Walk and watch for the next junction with Sassafras Trail. Turn left here and follow the winding path through upland forest featuring mature sassafras trees. The trail soon reconnects with Professor Chandler’s Long Walk for a final stretch back to the trailhead. This easy route offers a quiet, scenic experience year-round, though marsh-adjacent segments may be impassable at high tide.
