This easy route begins at the Stage Island Trailhead, located across from the beach parking lot at the southern tip of Plum Island within Sandy Point State Reservation. Follow the Stage Island Trail west through low dunes and coastal vegetation until you reach Ipswich Bluff, where expansive views open toward the Parker River estuary. From this point, hikers may either backtrack slightly and turn right onto Sandy Point Path, then follow a short spur left to the beach—or begin walking directly along the beach from the bluff.
Continue along the shoreline around the southern tip of the island, staying mindful of tides and weather, which can reduce beach access. The route finishes at the wooden boardwalk near the beach parking lot where the hike began. This is a flat, easy walk across sandy and occasionally packed terrain, with scenic views of salt marshes, tidal flats, and open ocean. Shorebird activity is high in this protected area—especially during nesting seasons—so be alert for wildlife closures and observe all posted signage. With its blend of open coast, quiet trails, and exceptional bird-watching, this is one of the most peaceful day hikes on Massachusetts’ North Shore.
