Loop
The Ravenswood Outer Loop begins and ends at the parking area on Western Avenue (Route 127) at the entrance to Ravenswood Park in Gloucester. From the trailhead, head north and turn right onto Ledge Hill Trail, marked with orange blazes. Follow the path through rocky forest terrain and mossy glades, then turn left onto Old Salem Road. Shortly after, take a right onto Fernwood Lake Trail, marked with blue blazes, which winds near the lake and into quieter woods. At the intersection with Magnolia Swamp Trail (yellow blazes), stay right to travel through wetland boardwalks and continue back toward the starting point.
This moderate route features rolling singletrack, uneven footing, and varied terrain with forested wetlands, boulder fields, and rich bird habitat. Trails may be muddy or slick, especially in spring or after heavy rain. The preserve is open year-round, with winter use for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Dogs are allowed off leash except in the parking area, and hunting may occur in surrounding lands from October through December. This is one of the best day hikes on the North Shore for exploring coastal Massachusetts woodlands in all seasons.
