There and Back
The Battell Trail begins at the Battell Trailhead off Elder Hill Rd, and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the crest of the Green Mountains. The route ascends a moderate to strenuous grade almost continuously, passing seasonal streams and rocky outcrops as it gains elevation. After a sustained climb, the trail reaches the Battell Shelter area, a common rest point for backpackers and a junction for the final push to the summit.
From the shelter, turn north on the Long Trail for a short but steeper ascent through spruce forest and exposed rock. The terrain near the summit can be slick and rugged, especially in wet weather. The route ends at the open summit of Mount Abraham, where hikers are rewarded with broad views of the Adirondacks and the Champlain Valley to the west. This route is best completed in dry conditions and offers one of the most scenic high-elevation day hikes in the Green Mountain National Forest.
