Description
The Wildcat Mound Loop is a mile long trail west of Neillsville, Wisconsin that offers scenic views from atop sandstone cliffs. This trail is located in Wildcat Park which is part of the Clark County, Wisconsin park system. The park is about 14 miles west of Neillsville off County Highway B. The address is W9841 County Highway B, Humbird, Wisconsin. The trailhead is located by the south end of the park's camping area near a pair of vault toilets. There are no fees for using the park during the day and camping is $7 per night as of 2024.The hike begins with a climb up a long set of wood and natural surface steps. The elevation gain is about 80. At the top of the hill take a right where the trail leads to a cliff that offers a wonderful view of the forest to the west. After taking in the views to the west, retrace your steps back to the area near the top of the stairs. Continue heading southwest; stay to the right and the trail takes hikers by the base of sandstone cliffs. Unfortunately, some of these cliffs have been marred by graffiti. After about a third of a mile the trail gains evaluation and does a U-turn and heads to the top of the cliffs past several vistas that offers sweeping views of the areas forest which is a mx of pines and deciduous trees. Note that this trail is not marked and hikers will see a few trail options along the way, but the cliffs can be used as a guide back to the trailhead. The little know Wildcat Mound Loop is a scenic hike for visitors passing through the Neillsville area. The views from the top of the sandstone cliffs a very scenic, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing.
