Starting from the signed parking area on Smith Road in Northborough, follow the Mentzer Trail east into the Mount Pisgah Conservation Area. This moderate route winds through mixed hardwood forest and over ledgy terrain, gradually gaining elevation. At the second junction, turn right onto Sparrow Trail, then continue right on Berlin Road Trail. After a steady climb, turn left onto South Overlook Trail to reach the first scenic ridge. A short spur leads to the South View—an eastern-facing overlook with broad views and, on clear days, a glimpse of the Boston skyline.
From here, turn left on Tyler Trail and head north across the rocky summit of Mount Pisgah, the high point of the route. The forested ridgeline includes pockets of open canopy and historic stone walls from former farmland. After crossing the summit, turn left on Mentzer Trail to descend back to the Smith Road trailhead. Hikers can extend this route by exploring additional trails south into the Wildlife Management Area or north onto land managed by the Town of Berlin. Seasonal conditions may make lower-lying sections muddy, especially near Howard Brook and other stream crossings. This year-round route offers a rewarding mix of elevation, scenery, and solitude for day hikes in central Massachusetts.
