This moderate route begins at the north entrance to the Cedar Hill property, with parking available at 360 Cedar Hill Street in Northborough. From the trailhead, a short but steady climb on Cedar Hill Trail leads up Cedar Hill, where open meadow areas offer views south toward Westborough. After reaching the high point, the route descends into gentler terrain, winding through a mix of oak-pine forest, wet meadows, and red-maple swamp.
After a short distance through the forest, turn left onto Crane Swamp Trail to begin the return. Near the end of the loop, the trail briefly follows a private road—stay on the marked route until rejoining Cedar Hill Trail. The route loops through the broader Crane Swamp Conservation Area, including parts of the Sawink Farm section. Conditions can be muddy after rainfall, especially in lower wetland areas, and mosquitoes and ticks are common in the warmer months. Birdwatchers may spot species like blue-winged warblers, and meadows support butterflies and other pollinators. This route is a good choice for year-round hiking and walking, highlighting the diverse topography and natural habitats found throughout the Crane Swamp Conservation Area.
