There and Back
The West River Trail begins at the Spring Tree Trailhead in Brattleboro and follows the West River northwest to the Rice Road. This out-and-back route traces an old railroad grade through quiet forests, with much of the path staying close to the river’s edge. From the southern end, the trail meanders along a flat, well-defined path with frequent views of the water, passing through mixed hardwoods and areas of wetlands.
The trail follows remnants of the historic West River Railroad, including old stonework and bridge abutments. Wildlife sightings, such as beavers and herons, are possible along this stretch, particularly near marshy sections. Occasional junctions with local roads and trail spurs require basic navigation awareness, but the route remains easy to follow. This trail is ideal for relaxed day hikes in southern Vermont, offering gentle grades, historic features, and consistent riverside scenery.
