Description
The Black Mountain Trail begins at a small trailhead on Rice Farm Road near Dummerston, and climbs steadily through a mix of hardwoods and dry ridgelines managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This moderate route offers hikers a relatively short but rewarding ascent to the open summit cliffs of Black Mountain. Follow the main trail uphill as it winds through oak and pine, gaining elevation on Class 2 terrain with some rocky sections underfoot. Around halfway up, the forest transitions into a rare pitch pine ecosystem, an unusual sight in Vermont. Occasional seasonal streams cross the trail, but no reliable drinking water is available. The summit provides expansive views over the West River valley, making it a popular spot for raptor watching during migration seasons. Dogs are allowed on leash, but fires and camping are not permitted anywhere within the refuge. This route is best hiked from spring through late fall, though early spring conditions may include lingering ice or mud.
