Description
The Maquam and Black Creek loop begins from a small trailhead off North River Street in Vermont’s Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. These interconnected segments form a mix of short loops and out-and-back routes through marshland, forest, and open wetland habitats. From the trailhead, hikers can follow wide, flat paths and boardwalks that weave through dense vegetation and across wet lowlands. The terrain remains easy throughout, making this a good option for slower-paced outings or wildlife-focused hikes. The area is a hotspot for migratory waterfowl, with spring and fall offering some of the best birdwatching opportunities in northern Vermont. Expect muddy conditions during the spring thaw or after heavy rains, and bring insect protection during warmer months. Despite its accessibility, the route offers a quiet, immersive experience in one of the region’s richest wetland ecosystems.
