Loop
The 100 Acre Woods Loop begins and ends at a parking lot off VT-104 near Fairfax, Vermont, making a full circuit through a lowland hardwood forest managed by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. This novice-to-intermediate route offers a mellow outing suitable for most hikers and is popular year-round, though it may become muddy in spring or icy during winter. Starting from the trailhead, hikers follow a well-marked path that winds through dense stands of maple, beech, and birch. A few short spurs and junctions appear along the way, but the main trail is easy to follow.
Interpretive signage provides insight into local ecology and wildlife, including deer, songbirds, and seasonal vernal pools. While most of the trail remains enclosed within the forest canopy, there are occasional glimpses westward toward Lake Champlain, especially in late fall or early spring when leaves are down. The trail also crosses small seasonal streams that are not reliable for drinking. This quiet, well-maintained route offers a peaceful half-day outing for those exploring day hikes near St. Albans or looking for an easy forest walk in the Champlain Valley.
