Description
The Birdsong Loop Trail is one of several marked trails at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. The loop is about 0.6 mile and the only of the primary trails on an uneven hardpacked dirt track. The course traces a portion of the refuge's wetlands area, giving rise to a thick coverage of trees and brush, making this one of the best areas in the refuge to try to catch sight of one of the area's 320 bird species. Natural springs bubble up from the ground, forming a desert oasis here. The path is easy, and varies from hard dirt to a few short portions of soft sand. Once leaving the wetlands, views across the southern Nevada desert open up, though these areas are also shadeless and subject to the area's intense sun and heat. The Birdsong Loop is the farthest trail from the refuge visitor center and requires that hikers cross portions of the Jackrabbit Loop, Bighorn Loop, and Coyote Loop trails to access. All amenities are available at the visitor center.
