Enabling users to create reliable and accurate plans before hitting the trail

onX Offroad, a pioneer in off-pavement adventure navigation, today announced the release of its proprietary Route Builder feature. This new feature was designed to enable off-roaders to quickly create, edit, and share a route–a line on the map that represents a proposed trip–across a vast network of roads and trails in the United States.

onX Offroad is a navigation app built for off-roaders by off-roaders. It maps 650,000 miles of interactive trails and dirt roads for 4×4, SxS, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles. The new Route Builder feature allows onX Offroad users to create custom routes along these trails and roads, connecting multiple trail systems and spanning OHV areas. By dropping a point on the desktop or mobile map, the tool’s “snap-to-trail” functionality will automatically trace the closest road or trail, building an adventure in mere seconds. Once created, users can save a route, share it, and hit the dirt–following along from their mobile device, tablet, or in-dash via CarPlay or Android Auto.

“We’re really excited and proud to release a new feature that showcases how we’ve built our navigation platform,” said onX Offroad General Manager, Rory Edwards. “While other mobile apps rely on trail and road data from third-party vendors, we’ve built our maps from the ground up. By combining thousands of data sources, our geospatial team works to ensure the accuracy and recency of trail information. This human-powered quality control lets our customers create high-fidelity routes across the country.”

To date, onX’s geospatial team has made 1.6 million edits to its proprietary map content, evaluating trails and roads with an off-roader’s eye. For example, this team refines trail routes so they are navigable, edits the geometry of each to match satellite imagery, and works to ensure that the vehicle accessibility information on each trail is up-to-date.”

In addition to custom data underpinning the new feature, the engine powering onX Offroad’s Route Builder was also built in-house.

“Because we built the Route Builder engine in-house, we’re not tied to a pre-existing solution built by a third party vendor,” explained Edwards. “That allows us to scale and innovate at a faster rate. In the near term, this avoids frustrating customer experiences, and lets users build a route spanning the entire country at an unmatched speed. In the future, this could enable onX Offroad users to build routes based on many different data attributions, such as vehicle width or technical rating, for example. We’re looking to iterate and innovate, solving unmet customer problems down the road.”

The onX Offroad Route Builder feature can be found in the Tools tab on both the desktop and mobile App. Users can create new routes with the Snap To tool while online or within cell service. The route’s detail card shows a trip’s elevation profile and distance totals. Once created, users can easily edit and share the route with friends. Or they can download it as a GPX or KML file type and import it directly into another onX Offroad account.

Anyone with an onX Offroad account can create routes with Route Builder, and Premium and Elite members can save and share those routes for future use. To try out Route Builder, make sure you have an onX Offroad account set up, then click the following link: https://webmap.onxmaps.com/offroad/map/route/create

onX Offroad, a pioneer in off-pavement adventure navigation, is returning as the official mapping tool for the industry’s burliest week of off-road racing, King of the Hammers.

From January 26 – February 11, 2023, tens of thousands of spectators will descend on Johnson Valley, California, making this the most-attended off-road race in North America. Attendees can rely on onX Offroad to make their way around the OHV area’s 96,000 acres, catching the action and navigating the terrain around the busy race course.

After downloading onX Offroad, users can search for “Johnson Valley OHV” to see the ULTRA4 race course, the “streets” of Hammertown, pit locations, mileage points, spectator spots, and start and finish lines. They can also mark up the map to make it their own, creating routes and dropping Waypoints that indicate camp spots, meet up areas, and destination points–and easily share them with friends. Before heading to Johnson Valley, onX Offroad suggests attendees download the area’s offline maps so they can know where they are and find their way in the desert, even when far away from cell service and the event’s famous “Cellphone Bush.”

“Cresting the hill on Boone Road and dropping into the King of the Hammers lake bed is one of my favorite moments of the year,” said HammerKing Productions Vice President, Ted Livingston. “The dust is blowing, thousands of people are setting up camp, and by tapping into onX Offroad I can easily find my friends, scout the best spectator spots, and make the most out of the week.”

The official Ultra4 race course will be released on February 2nd, and it will be immediately added to the App’s Basemaps for the Johnson Valley area. Spectators will be able to use this as a tool to navigate race day, to find the ideal spots, and safely travel between different areas of the lakebed.

To help maximize everyone’s race week, onX Offroad has filmed an abbreviated introduction to their app and how to utilize the features with the King of the Hammers event in mind. Check out the quick Masterclass here.

Additionally, King of the Hammers attendees receive 20% off an onX Offroad subscription, of both Premium or Elite levels. To redeem, use this link or enter the code kingofhammers at checkout at the onX Offroad website.

This Memorial Day, an onX Offroad veteran asked the company to support an organization close to his heart, A Soldier’s Child Foundation (ASC). ASC supports the children and families of our fallen veterans, and onX is proud to pledge 10% of its membership sales and 100% of the proceeds from a limited edition Memorial Day hat to the organization, in recognition of those who fought for our country and the freedom to explore its lands and trails.

onX Offroad is a pioneer in off-pavement adventure navigation. The app is built for off-roaders by off-roaders, and immerses users into a world of possibilities–including 615,000+ miles of trails and 500,000 recreation points. Various onX team members have served our country, including Jake Rosaia, onX Offroad Partner and Community Specialist and Air Force veteran. Like many companies, onX Offroad historically offered a sale during Memorial Day, but Rosaia envisioned making this year more impactful.

“For many, Memorial Day is about getting outdoors and hitting the trails,” said Rosaia. “But the long weekend is more than just a day off of work. We wanted to remember and honor those who fought to keep this beautiful country and off-roading land free for us to enjoy. And one of the best ways we can honor their memory is by helping take care of their children and families, through ASC.”

ASC supports the children of military personnel who lost their lives defending the United States. The organization celebrates birthdays, provides mentorship, offers scholarships, and hosts outdoor camps that encourage children to develop a lifelong passion for the outdoors. Currently, ASC is positively impacting the lives of over 4,000 children who are enrolled in the organization’s programs.

“ASC was founded because I wanted to do more for a fallen Marine’s family,” explained Daryl J. W. Mackin, ASC’s founder. “There were holes in our government’s programs for fallen veterans who didn’t qualify to receive the support they needed. For their families, every day is Memorial Day–there’s no escaping those realities. I’m thankful that onX Offroad is reminding our culture to support those who deserve it most.”

Visit onX Offroad’s blog to read an interview with Mackin and learn more about how ASC helps provide for children and the families of our fallen veterans.

Through June 1, follow this link to subscribe to onX and donate 10% of the membership to ASC. In addition to the donation, memberships will also be discounted by 30% through June 1, 2022.

Lastly, the limited edition onX Offroad Memorial Day is on sale in the onX Offroad Shop. Underneath the camo cap’s brim is a printed reminder of the appropriate times to respectfully remove one’s hat. One hundred percent of the hat’s sale proceeds will be donated to ASC.

Bolsters efforts through grants, partnerships, trail cleanup guides, and more

onX Offroad, the industry’s leading off-road navigation app, is doubling down on stewardship efforts to help improve and conserve public land access across the country. As trail season kicks off, onX is bolstering its stewardship team, offering grants, calling on its users to help clean up local playgrounds, and partnering with prominent off-road organizations to promote ethical and responsible trail use.

“Trails and public lands are at the heart of what we do,” said onX Offroad General Manager, Rory Edwards. “But if we aren’t good stewards of these shared places, we risk losing our access to them. Both on-the-ground action and stewardship education through our app platform are crucial to maintaining these public playgrounds for generations to come.”

A New Stewardship Role

onX Offroad strengthened its stewardship commitment by adding Becky Marcelliano to the team in the newly created role of Stewardship Manager. In this position she will use the onX Offroad platform to raise awareness for stewardship best practices, provide the public and policymakers with information around the challenges of off-road access, and host on-the-ground stewardship projects. She will be an active advocate on behalf of the off-road community, bringing onX Offroad’s resources to bear through multiple channels.

“Outdoor enthusiasts become stewards when they find personal connection to the landscapes they enjoy and have knowledge of what responsible recreation looks like,” said Becky Marcelliano, onX Stewardship Manager. “As a company that encourages outdoor recreation, we have a responsibility to help inform and empower our audience to leave a positive impact on the trails they drive and do their part to conserve the great places we all love so much.”

Stewardship Grants

Since 2018 onX has committed a portion of its sales to secure and protect access, and to help restore and maintain trails of all types. In 2021 onX opened a grant program designed to support access and stewardship projects, with funding generally ranging between $7,500 and $15,000 per project. To date, the onX grant program has improved access to 60,000 acres of public land, and built or maintained 40 miles of trails. Over the next few years, the company is committed to helping secure or improve public access to 150,000 acres and 150 miles of trails.

The next round for onX grant applications closes May 22, 2022. The company encourages trail associations, clubs, and other groups to submit applications to fund projects ranging from trail building, creating easements, performing maintenance, and installing signage.

Find out more about onX’s Access and Stewardship Initiatives and grant program on the onX website.

Action via the onX Offroad App

onX Offroad has identified off-road hot spots that are well-loved by enthusiasts, but also need more stewardship attention. Starting in Sedona, AZ  and working across the country, onX Offroad is integrating regionally-relevant stewardship tips into the app-platform, notifying users who are recreating in those areas.

In addition to bolstering stewardship awareness, onX Offroad is calling on its users to join in trail cleanup efforts this spring. In partnership with The Public Land Stewards of Bend, onX developed a Trail Cleanup Guide, a step-by-step resource to creating a safe, organized, and successful event that off-roaders can use to get the most impact out of their stewardship efforts. The Trail Cleanup Guide will launch on Earth Day, April 22, 2022

Lastly, the onX Offroad app offers thousands of miles of trail information, providing users with the tools they need to confidently navigate to a new adventure. As a result, onX hopes to help spread out the impact and reduce over-trafficked and over-loved trail systems.

Education through Industry Partnerships

onX Offroad has renewed its partnership with TreadLightly!, a premier nonprofit dedicated to promoting responsible recreation through stewardship and educational programs. Through this partnership, onX will help support TreadLightly!’s ongoing trail access improvements and will continue to promote ethical and responsible trail use through in-app features, such as trail width information and the most up-to-date maps.

Eliminating tap ambiguity with industry-first technology

onX Offroad today announced the newest feature, Fat Fingers Mode, is now available on both Android and iOS app versions. One of the company’s top requested features, Fat Fingers Mode will leverage industry-first technology to eliminate tap ambiguity and help users select trails and drop Waypoints with precision.

onX Offroad is a pioneer in off-pavement adventure navigation. The app is built for off-roaders by off-roaders, and immerses users into a world of possibilities–including 550,000+ miles of trails and 500,000 recreation points. Trip planning features let users review trail descriptions, assess difficulty ratings and trip durations, and check out route photos. By sharing customized Waypoints and Tracks, users can invite their friends along for the adventure and mark places they don’t want to forget.

“For years we’ve heard onX Offroad members lament about a time they shared the wrong Waypoint or selected the wrong trail, ending up in the wrong place,” said onX Offroad GM Rory Edwards. “I’ve been there myself, and frankly, it’s embarrassing. We’re excited to debut this new feature, ensuring that users of all finger sizes can reliably select trails and Waypoints on their screens.”

onX Offroad Premium and Elite users can find Fat Fingers Mode in the app’s settings. Once selected, the app will ask to measure the users’ dominant pointer finger, and automatically adjust the tap ratio accordingly.

“After wrenching on a vehicle all day, no one wants to fumble around with a finicky screen experience,” said onX Senior Product Manager, Eric Evans. “We’re proud to debut this self-learning technology to our users–it’s an industry first. Fat fingering is in the past.”

Fat Fingers Mode is yet another major update from onX Offroad, as their team works to continually improve the user experience and functionality while helping drivers go farther, with confidence.

If you’ve read this far, please take note of the date this release was published and head to this website to vote on a real feature that you’d like to see us create next: https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/app/features/fat-finger.
