Algonquin Peak

No rating
A steady, unrelenting climb to the second-highest summit in New York, ending on a bare-rock crown with one of the largest alpine zones in the Adirondacks. The payoff is a 360-degree panorama of the High Peaks, from Mount Colden's slide-scarred face to Lake Placid and beyond.

Description
The route begins and ends at Adirondak Loj and reaches the summit of Algonquin Peak (5,114'). From the lot, follow the Van Hoevenberg Trail on wide, rolling, rocky-rooty tread. At 1 mile, continue straight onto the Algonquin Peak Trail, leaving the Marcy Dam route to the left. The trail steepens steadily over rocks and roots, crossing several streams. At 2.5 miles, pass the Wright Peak Ski Trail on the left — it doesn't reach the summit and shouldn't be hiked in summer. Cross MacIntyre Brook below a waterfall, then climb two steep, rocky sections. At 3 miles, reach the junction with the 0.4-mile spur to Wright Peak (left, steep bedrock). Continue straight on very steep bedrock to timberline. Crux: above timberline the route is open, exposed, and slick when wet or icy. Follow the yellow paint blazes and stay on bare rock to protect the alpine vegetation. The summit is at about 3.8 miles. Descend the same route. The steep bedrock and slabs are hard on knees and slippery when wet. Microspikes or crampons are needed on the upper slabs in winter.
