Kite Lake Overlook

Kite Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake located near Alma, Colorado, positioned at an elevation of approximately 12,016 feet. The trailhead serves as a popular starting point for climbing the surrounding peaks of Mount Democrat, Mount Cameron, and Mount Lincoln. Accessible from Alma via Buckskin Road (County Road 8), the 5.5-mile approach consists of a rough gravel road. While passable for most two-wheel-drive vehicles to the historic Paris Mill, high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for the final, rougher section leading to the lake. The hiking route is approximately 1.5 miles round-trip, featuring 530 feet of cumulative elevation gain and reaching a maximum elevation of 12,561 feet. The trail begins with a relatively flat grade before transitioning into a steep, rocky climb. Hikers can observe summer wildflowers and historic mining remnants along the way. To view the distinct kite shape of the lake, hikers must ascend above the basin. Facilities at the trailhead include vault restrooms, a day-use area with picnic tables, and tent camping sites. A self-pay station is located at the entrance for parking and overnight camping fees.
