Trail Overview

Ellis Jeep Trail starts out with some challenging climbs and descents through the forest until reaching a ridge. This is a relatively new trail that has been rerouted for mud, so make sure to stay on the designated route. It is a popular area for ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes with options to camp with campers and hauling trailers. The trail is open mid June through November, depending on weather.

Difficulty

Moderate. Mostly easy with intermittent loose rocky climbs and downhill sections. Narrow section, not recommended for oversize vehicles. After Waypoint 03, a sign said 'Most Difficult' but we encountered easy to moderate conditions.

History

In the 1800s the orignial Ellis Trail was a wagon road used to transport lumber and supplies to mining camps between the towns of Hahns Peak and Encampment, Wyo. The original town of Hahns Peak is now called Hahns Peak Village.

This was a fun trail but there are some down trails making it very narrow for full sized vehicles. We did it in a 4 door Bronco and there were some areas where there was only 3ish inches of clearance on each side. Further up, a few miles in, the trail sign says no full size vehicles. Full size vehicles may (or may not) be able make it. We got off the road when the 1101.1 turns off to loop back towards the 501.1. At this point there is a road block but it looks like it’s been driven around. Definitely would not recommend taking any vehicles wider than a standard Jeep/Bronco but nothing super technical.

I entered the trail from the point at the WY border, not knowing of the Road Closed sign at the 499.1 / 82.1 intersection. There was a larger tree felled across the road about 1/2 mile west of that intersection but I cleared it. Not sure if the road was closed because of that tree or not. Did not encounter any other obstructions on that short part.

Very dry and dusty. No other vehicles on the trail. High winds last night and this morning brought down a lot of trees. We managed to leave the saw in the truck but got four trees cleared with a winch. Finally came across one too big to move about a half mile South of the Wyoming line. Trail is in pretty good shape otherwise.

Fun trail! Came across a few people but not too bad. Nothing too crazy on this trail. Fairly rocky a majority of the way. You can also extend this trail by starting at Steamboat Lake and going under the base of Hahns Peak.
