Trail Overview

This is a seasonal trail, open from 10/1 to 1/15. This scenic point-to-point trail in the George Washington National Forest runs along Trail ID 152 in West Virginia. Mitchell Knob trail offers climbs and descents, scenic views of the mountains and valleys, and several switchbacks. Dispersed camping is allowed along the full length of the trail within 150 feet off the road, with multiple camping options. Hunters use this trail, so be sure to stay aware.

Difficulty

This is a dirt or rocky road with gentle grades. The trail is mostly dirt and smaller rocks with no real obstacles other than some shallow water or mud puddles, safe for most 4WD and high-clearance 2WD vehicles. Roads are typically one vehicle wide. Cell phone service is mostly unavailable or spotty along the trail.

This was a fun seasonal trail that just opened Oct 1st. The forest service has done a good job clearing tons of downed trees and trimming back the overgrowth. The last mile or so going towards fort seybert had not yet been mowed and reminded me of Pennsylvania driveable trails in their state forests. The trail was rocky with a few small creek crossings and small mud holes. Doable in any high clearance vehicle on good tires 2/10.

Seasonally open trail. On October 2, 2026 it appears to have just opened. Lots of trees have been cut and recently cleared. Several creek crossings, a few climbs but nothing super steep. No obstacles. Several areas with views of distant mountains but nothing super epic vistas. It was well trimmed and wide- I got no pinstripes with my Tundra. I enjoyed the ride through here.
