Trail Overview

Enjoy a scenic drive over Beury Mountain. You will have a beautiful view of The New River along with exposed rock faces as you go up the mountain out of Thurmond. As you crest the top of the mountain you will see numerous boulders lying on the forest floor and maybe some wildlife like deer and turkey. This is mainly a single-track road with pull-offs to let oncoming vehicles pass.

It was a great day. A little muddy, but there wasn't much traffic. A nice trail day for a few Jeepers

Easy trail with few challenges. Right past Beury Mountain on the right coming from Thurmond there was a seasonal road open that I couldn’t find on any maps. I followed it in for a while and it was more challenging. It seemed to be heading down to McKendree Road. It got narrow and I quit it. Anybody know where it goes?

Easy day after a little rain previously in the week. Only saw a few other folks on bikes and a sxs. Overall an easy time cruising and the mountain. Great for families looking for a low key trail ride.

when traveling from the area of the old Ghost Town and heading up the mountain, there are a few areas that are extremely narrow with short sight lines. Used caution. we saw a mother black bear and cub run off the trail, and a very large black house cat about halfway through.

Gets a little rough at places. Lots of cutoff trails. A few places to pitch a tent.

Western end is narrow at spots, expect some pinstripes. The eastern side is well maintained gravel, came across many other people so watch your speed around blind turns.

No access to the old firewater tower, the branch road to the cemetery is more difficult with a couple tight spots and a steep grade

well-maintained service road in the New River Gorge National Park. we went up the mountain from Thurmond — a cool little river town. the initial ascent is a good bit steep and single jeep wide for a mile or so. some nice river views and a steep embankment. the road has no obstacles but there is a pucker factor with the single track and dropoff. after the climb it’s just a nice gravel road. the Mann Mountain lookout tower is not actually on the Beury Mountain road. you need to go left on Chestnut Knob road to then hook back left to go up the Mann Mountain Tower Road to get to it — we missed that.. not sure if you can access the tower. a nice ride near the New River Gorge Bridge!

Only saw one other vehicle the entire time I was there. First couple miles out of Thurmond I was glad I didn’t pass anybody on that section, but the rest would have been quite easy to pass. Ran into some wild pheasant and deer and a few local turkeys who were less than happy with me coming through.
