Meadow/Gauley Access Trail

The Meadow/Gauley Access Trail is an engaging two-mile descent ideal for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and ATVs looking to access the scenic Gauley River corridor. Starting at an elevation of approximately 1,862 feet, the route drops about 690 feet over its course down to 1,186 feet. The initial section of the trail presents a rough, rocky challenge with obstacle sizes up to 12 inches and some notable drop-offs, giving it a technical rating of 4. Soon after this rugged start, the trail transitions into a smoother, mostly gravel surface. Along this upper section, travelers will encounter a shallow water crossing situated right next to the historic Civil War grave of soldier Nicholas Ramsey, which visitors must respect. As the route continues downward, several narrow side trails branch off the main path, though these spurs are accessible only by ATVs and SxSs. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles should plan to stop and utilize the wide turnaround area near the end of the main trail, as the terrain beyond this point is unsuitable for full-sized rigs. Limited parking for up to two vehicles is available at the upper trailhead for those wishing to explore the area on foot. This short but scenic trail offers a unique blend of historical discovery and direct access to one of the region's most famous river canyons.
