Trail Overview

Walking Horse Trail is a 1.9-mile out-and-back trail in the Foothills ORV system that follows a single-lane gravel road legally restricted to dirt bikes and ATVs. The route climbs the hillside using numerous tight switchbacks while offering excellent views of the surrounding landscape. The road surface consists of hard-packed gravel covered with loose, marbly rock that can make traction unpredictable, especially in corners. Several water bars cross the trail but are easily negotiated at moderate speeds. The trail ends at a gate at its intersection with South Mount Angeles Road. While the gate blocks larger vehicles, motorcycles may legally ride around it to continue the route. A Discover Pass is required for recreation and parking within the Foothills ORV system.

Difficulty

Walking Horse Trail features a loose, marbly surface and numerous tight switchbacks. The slippery rock over hard-packed soil can reduce traction during climbing, braking, and cornering, while the repeated switchbacks require good throttle and clutch control. The water bars are generally minor obstacles but can become more challenging if approached too quickly. Overall, the trail rewards smooth riding and careful line choice.
