Trail Overview

Umtanum ridge road is a dirt road with a few deep rutted sections. There are multiple switchbacks as you continue up the hills and as you come down. There is a small bridge crossing with an excellent camping spot both to the right and the left of the bridge. Continuing up the mountains involves some steep inclines and some deeply rutted sections. Loose rocks and dirt road sections cover most of the terrain. Rattlesnakes have been seen on this trail, so please exercise caution around wildlife.

Lots of dirt and dust, and lots of jagged rocks. Some steeper spots going up, and a few places to pull off and camp. Good views of Ellesnberg and Yakima to the north and east. Mount rainier and the cascades to the west. Pretty windy up top but worth the drive.

The lower section is fast and smooth while the upper section is rutted and rocky.

Entered from the Wenas side of the trail. Drove to the top of the ridge, camped for the night, and went back down the same way in the morning. We did not drive the full trail, but the Wenas side to the top of the ridge is clear and a relatively easy drive, just a few off-camber areas / loose rocks to be aware of and prepared for. Beautiful this time of year with wildflowers!

oasis springs area deep mud pit. only high clearance 4x4 with big tires have a chance to make it. several people went off trail to bypass it be fell into softer and deeper mud. best bet, stay on track and have buddies recover you. word of the wise, momentum is your friend along with shear guts and power. group went from the cell tower to oasis springs, didn't get across to see the other side of umptatum ridge road.

Very rocky trail with a lot of uneven surface. High clearance is def recommended. I would say level 3 is accurate on this trail but if it’s really muddy or the ground is mushy then I would say this trail will be harder. There are some easy bypass you can take during this route. It’s def a fun trail to just to travel through the hills and you can looked on the city of ellensburg. I had T-Mobile signal during this trail.

Trail had a lot of rocks and holes. But otherwise pretty good. Had to air down to 25 psi!

Beautiful conditions, with a couple muddy ruts and a couple rocky inclines. I went east to west. In that direction there is a ~16 degree rocky downhill in the second half, which might be challenging to climb or sketchy in the wet, depending on your vehicle. The western half also had some tight-ish spots where careful attention was required to avoid pinstripes on my Raptor - but not quite bad enough for me to get out my hedge trimmer. Stay on top and out of the ruts, and this should be a nice trip for any 4x4 with decent clearance.

Trail was open and drivable. Light snow on the ground and a ton of large surface frozen puddles. One downhill section was a bit sketchy with the frozen snow, but not a bad trek overall.
