Trail Overview
Branching off the main forestry network, FS 5401 operates as a brief, out-and-back spur primarily used to access the popular Trapper Creek Trailhead (Trail No. 192). This short corridor carves through a beautifully dense, lush evergreen environment within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, shaded heavily by a towering canopy and thick roadside ferns. Earning an easy level 1 difficulty rating, the wide, meticulously graded gravel and crushed rock surface provides an exceptionally smooth driving experience. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to this dead-end route to reach the hiking trailhead, which features an informational kiosk, a vault toilet, and a large gravel parking area. Along the short half-mile stretch leading up to the trail access, visitors will also cross a sturdy wooden bridge and find numerous spacious clearings that serve as excellent dispersed campsites. The drivable vehicle route officially ends at a heavy orange metal gate marking a road closure.
Difficulty
Rated as a level 1, this wide forest service road delivers an incredibly smooth, stress-free drive. The hard-packed gravel roadbed is highly maintained and bladed, meaning there are absolutely no deep erosion washouts, off-camber sections, or embedded rock obstacles to challenge undercarriage clearance. The lane is generously wide, eliminating any concerns about trailside brush grazing the vehicle's paint. The drive is mostly flat and heavily reinforced, making it a simple, relaxing cruise to the trailhead parking area.
