Trail Overview
Operating as a critical, multi-use recreation connector within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, FS 3065 is a well-traveled dirt and gravel route providing direct access to the Government Mineral Springs area. The trail cuts through a beautifully dense, heavily shaded canopy of mature evergreen timber, accented by thick, vibrant green roadside ferns and undergrowth. Earning a difficulty rating of 2, the roadbed is generally wide and well-defined, though travelers must navigate segments of strictly one-way traffic as the corridor weaves through the woods. Outdoor enthusiasts heavily utilize this access road to reach several key public utility points, including the Government Mineral Springs Campground, the historic rentable Guard Station cabins, the winter Sno-park, and the highly popular Soda Peaks Lake Trailhead.
Difficulty
Holding a level 2 rating, this primary access road provides a relatively easy and straightforward drive, though it requires a cautious pace. The packed dirt and gravel surface is generally flat and lacks deep washouts or severe off-camber sections, making undercarriage clearance a non-issue. The corridor is also cleared wide enough to prevent brush from scratching the sides of the vehicle. However, the road is heavily pockmarked with scattered, shallow potholes that require drivers to pick their lines carefully to avoid a jarring ride. Additionally, drivers must remain highly alert for oncoming traffic and yield appropriately within the designated one-way stretches.
