Trail Overview
The Small Getaway Amongst Locked Gates is a short but highly enjoyable off-road route ideal for beginners, SxSs, and four-wheel-drive vehicles looking to explore a quick series of dirt paths and scenic lookouts near the Washington coast. Spanning roughly 2.2 miles with a technical rating of 4, this trail offers a quick escape with a modest elevation profile that ranges from about 95 feet up to a peak of 230 feet and a total elevation gain of roughly 360 feet. Located on Washington State Department of Natural Resources land just north of Ocean Beach Road, the entrance consists of a somewhat hidden gravel turn-off that can be difficult to spot from the main pavement. The surrounding landscape is primarily a clear-cut area, providing wide-open views of the Pacific Northwest terrain, though there is one pocket of dense, mature forest that offers full tree canopy coverage.
While most of the route is accessible to standard vehicles and does not require high clearance, drivers should be prepared for varying track conditions depending on the season. The primary surfaces consist of dirt and gravel, which remain relatively easy to navigate during dry summer months but can quickly turn muddy and slick during the wet winter season. Visitors should download offline maps prior to heading out due to extremely spotty cellular coverage in this coastal pocket. Recreational target shooting is common in the area, requiring caution when exploring the spur trails or stopping at the dispersed camping sites along the way. Additionally, the route serves as a perfect launching point for coastal exploration, situated just 20 minutes east of charming beach towns that offer dining, fuel, and direct beach access.
