Silver Creek Trail #258 is a narrow singletrack near Randle that’s geared toward experienced dirt bike riders looking for true backcountry mileage in Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Starting at Forest Road 5240.015 near Bear Prairie, the trail runs generally southwest to Forest Road 84, with early crossings at FR 5222.016 providing access options. The overall grade is fairly mild, but don’t mistake that for easy riding. The native surface—dirt with embedded rock, roots, and seasonal mud—can turn slick and rutted after storms, and the narrow tread leaves little room for error. Expect tight sightlines, scattered debris, and occasional minor washouts typical of Cascades singletrack. Cell service is unreliable, and changing conditions are part of the ride.
Trail #258 is open to dirt bikes and shared with hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. It is closed to motorized use from May 15 through July 10, and snow can linger into late spring at higher elevations. The route passes near Bear Prairie at the headwaters of Skate Creek, site of a Ranger Station established in 1906 and seasonally occupied until 1947. Travel is limited to designated use per the current Gifford Pinchot MVUM, and seasonal status should be verified before planning your ride.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate trail because it has several moderately technical features along the route, including mild switchbacks, exposed, narrow sections, and small roots. While the trail itself remains pretty smooth and easy, the exposure makes it more suited to intermediate riders.
