Trail Overview

Road 19 connects Jackknife Ridge Road to Quilomene Ridge Road. It is a descent into a valley with an ascent on the opposite side. There could be water to cross at the lowest point depending on the season. Depending on the direction expect either a notable decent or asent.

Difficulty

The climb up to Quilomene Ridge is somewhat technical and the road is not visible at times due to high vegetation. The medium-sized loose rock can cause some slips but a slow and steady throttle does well. There was a turn with a drop on the driver's side that felt a bit off-camber and could be uncomfortable but doable for an experienced off-road driver. Spring is likely muddy and has traction challenges.

Was southbound on this trail, so the decent was very bad, tried dropping in driver tire into center line but mud made rear left tire slide into edge. Slid for about 5 feet before traction was made. Stock vehicle, maybe 35 or 37 inch tires can manage it heading northbound. Wouldn't recommend southbound direction.

About 1/2 way there was a steep wet climb with some substantial ruts that require some technical driving. Water running down the road creating slippery and muddy terrain made the ascent tricky. Backing down was not an option as the slick mud pushed you towards a ravine. But with a little throttle control and wheel placement it’s manageable.

Dry till 1.7 miles from the Quilomene Ridge trail to a very muddy section. Turned around here as it looked like trouble and we were alone and there’s really nothing for a winch to hook up. Otherwise the trail heavily rutted but not a problem. With some drying should be passable.

Left Elk Camp early morning. Conditions were dry, pin stripping is still an issue, decent into valley was relatively easy. One tight area, 20 feet, that barely fits a vehicle with a 7 feet drop off to the left. Further on, decent into valley was easy, climb out was relatively easy with tires aired down and lockers on; a bit of mud on the way up and a large boulder on the right which hit the frame going over. After that a few off-camber areas that you will need to choose wisely, friend got stuck here awhile ago. The top of the trail dusty, large rocks and slow travel. Besides those sections mentioned, a good route in or out while there is no rain. Otherwise, I would pick another route.
