Trail Overview

Oak Creek - NF 1400 is an approachable, scenic gravel route ideal for beginners and casual offroaders looking to explore the rugged beauty of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Connecting Bethel Ridge down to Bear Lake, this 3.9-mile point-to-point road features an easy technical rating of 2 and can be navigated by most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs under dry conditions. The trail spans elevations from approximately 3,980 feet to over 5,300 feet, winding through a landscape transitioning from high forest down into the lake basin. Because of the elevation, the route is typically snowbound from December until mid-June, making late summer and early autumn the prime seasons for a visit. While the driving is generally straightforward along the gravel surface, visitors must remain alert for environmental hazards, particularly following the devastating 2021 wildfire that affected this corridor. Wind and winter storms regularly down dead trees across the roadway, so carrying a chainsaw or recovery gear is highly recommended to avoid getting blocked. The route descends about 1,334 feet as you head from the high ridge toward Bear Lake, offering sweeping views of the surrounding hillsides and valleys. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and potential route washouts, and always check seasonal closures before setting out into this portion of the forest.
