Trail Overview

Start this trail by turning onto Crystal River Ranch Road in Greenwater, Washington. This is an easy-to-travel, gravel logging road that takes you up to Lonesome Lake. The trip is about an hour one way and about 16 miles to reach the lake. You will start on the pavement in a residential area, so make sure to drive respectfully. Make sure to take the second right-hand turn to get onto FS 75, where you will encounter the start of the gravel. You will know if you made the wrong turn because you will run into a gate. Be sure to pay attention as you are driving and keep a lookout for potholes. There is not a ton, but there are some deep ones. There are few turns to get to the lake, but along the way, you will encounter many off-shoots and rural camping spots. Once you reach the top of Haller Pass, (about 7 miles in) you will be greeted with a stunning view of Mount Rainier. (You can take the off-shoot on the inside (right) of the top turn to reach a cool lookout.) Eventually, you will reach a point in the road where you drop onto FS 73. (FS 73 can also take you back to Highway 410.) Keep straight on FS 73. You will need to take a left at the next intersection, and that will bring you to beautiful Lonesome Lake. The water levels change often depending on the season, and it is a steep hike down, but well worth it. There is a day-use covered area close to the road and an outhouse. It's dog-friendly and paddleboard-friendly as well. This road is open year-round and accessible by most vehicles, but during the winter months can be inaccessible to certain vehicles due to snow. There will also be spots that do not get a lot of sun, so they can stay snowy until late May or even June. Keep that in mind when planning a trip to the lake. During the summer, the lake can also get pretty busy, even considering it is a lake deep in the mountains! Have fun exploring and make sure to stay safe!

Difficulty

This is an easy-to-travel road, but it's not maintained consistently. There are some deep potholes and washboarding. The snow is not plowed, and in the winter there can be large ruts from others in the snow.

History

The history of Lonesome Lake: Johnie and Clyde met in the summer in Sumner, Washington. They immediately became close friends, which soon seemed to be developing into a romance. So began Clyde Eaton's tale of the naming of Lonesome Lake. In January of 1935, a bitter quarrel erupted between the two; they thought they would part ways, that they were through. Clyde returned to his trap lines on the West Fork and often stayed at a lean-to he'd built at a small lake in the mountains. One lonely winter night at the lake, when the snow was 8 feet deep, Clyde was feeling "pretty lonesome and sorry for [himself]. [He] heated a piece of wire and wrote the words LONESOME LAKE on a shake and nailed it to a tree. The name stuck like glue." Clyde and Johnie Eaton were married on September 20, 1936, and spent their honeymoon at this lake.

Easy drive. Road was narrow in spots, and be ready for pot holes and wash boards.

A few big potholes but other than that pretty well maintained. 1 lane road so dont go too fast you'll need to make room for oncoming traffic

Cleared a few small branches along the way, saw a few people coming and going… only a small amount of snow up at the top. Super easy to navigate and a fun drive! Bring and leave a roll of TP for the vault toilet if you feel like being nice 😆

Trail was cleared up until about a half mile from the lake. Once I got closer I found some deep snow still. I wouldn’t recommend going unless you have 4x4 only because of the snow, other than that the roads pretty well maintained and cleared of all the downed trees.

Trail was mostly clear up until .2 miles from the trail head where there was some snow. Didn't have high clearance for the ruts so we parked and walked the rest of the way to the lake.

Road the ADV Motorcycle today and couldn’t make it past 4600 feet. Most of the trail has melted/rutted 4x4 tracks in it up to about 4600 feet where it turns to 4x4 ruts with ice. There were a few 4x4s that passed us just fine. However, if you’re on a Motorcycle you might need to wait just a little bit longer.

Road was very snowy and soft could stay on top very well.some sections were off camber and made it very difficult we were doing a lot of winching and recovering. Main road to lonesome was well traveled. Mule ridge we were braking trail and fight the snow as far as we could go on 4psi and on 40s

Fun trail, my first time to lonesome lake it was still mostly frozen over. The trail starts off dusty forest service road but gets snowy as you go higher up. Some great views and off shoot trails along the way.

Beginning portion of trail is dirt and no issues getting by. Once the snow starts, it is icy and when we went midday, we had some parts of the trail in the sun. About less than a mile from Lonesome Lake there is a shelf road portion of the trail where the shelf side was in the sun and the snow is soft but slick, but the uphill portion is in the shade and icy, which caused my rig to slide toward the edge of the shelf road. Was unable to get traction and self recovered attempts increased slide to edge. We had to do a rescue with 2 vehicles (pendulum maneuver) and everything was fine after that. The trail is definitely passable, but air down low (we had not originally) and stay close to the uphill portion of the trail, don’t be fouled by previous tracks closer to shelf side. Recommend going with others.

Road is majority snow and ice, but simple and Relatively moderate drive to the lake. There is snow and ice with frequent potholes. There are some downed trees that have already been cut for vehicles to pass through. Be careful of logging trucks on the first part of the trail.

Most of the trail upto about 4000ft was wet and lot of pot holes. Last stretch had some snow. With Good tires and low pressure can make it easily m. ome places it was bit icy. Snow at this time seems to be less and forgiving. The lake was absolute wow with its frozen look.

the trail itself it's pretty easy. it was rainy and wet almost the whole time. and as we got closer to the lake, snow started to show. it was only an inch or two deep but got a tiny bit slippery in some areas. there was one puddle of water that was maybe a foot deep. I recommend paying attention while at the lake, I did notice some small bear tracks around the lake. all in all, pretty simple trail
