Kugel Creek is an ideal out-and-back adventure for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts seeking a classic, lush forest crawl up a scenic mountainside in the Olympic National Forest. Stretching approximately 3.2 miles one way, this route climbs steadily from an elevation of 1,100 feet to nearly 2,674 feet, gaining roughly 1,595 feet along the way. Sporting a technical rating of 3, the trail consists primarily of an uneven, rutted dirt surface with the potential for loose rocks, shallow sandy washes, and water crossings under a foot deep. Standard high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and OHVs will find the moderate obstacles manageable, though a single large eroded section presents a localized challenge that requires careful tire placement.
As you ascend deeper into the dense canopy, the track becomes increasingly narrow and overgrown, making pinstriping almost inevitable for full-sized rigs. Early season trips or travel after heavy rainfall will introduce muddy conditions and deep water holes, requiring drivers to prepare for slick terrain.
