Trail Overview

The south trail through the Colockum Wildlife Area, just west of Vantage, WA, is a great introduction to off-road driving with rewarding views throughout. The route is mostly dirt and gravel, with sections of loose rock on the hill climbs that keep things interesting without being overly technical. A series of mellow switchbacks leads you up through open shrub-steppe terrain, where traction can vary depending on conditions, but overall remains very manageable for beginners. As you gain elevation, the landscape opens up to sweeping vistas, including clear views of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams on a good day. Beyond the driving, this area offers plenty to explore. There are numerous pull-offs and spur roads worth checking out, many leading to quiet, dispersed camping spots with incredible sunset views. Short hikes from the ridgelines provide even better vantage points, and the wildlife area lives up to its name. Keep an eye out for deer, elk, and a variety of birds. It’s an ideal spot to spend a full day or even a weekend, combining an easy off-road adventure with opportunities to get out, explore, and enjoy Central Washington’s wide-open beauty.
