Trail Overview
The Colockum Wildlife Area west of Vantage, WA, offers a great introductory off-road experience with wide, well-traveled dirt and gravel roads that are generally smooth but can include some washboarding and loose sections depending on the season. The trail gradually climbs through open shrub-steppe terrain, making it an ideal place for beginners to get comfortable with basic off-road driving techniques like throttle control and picking lines. As you gain elevation, the landscape really opens up—on clear days, you’ll be rewarded with expansive views of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams rising above the rolling hills. This area is perfect for a relaxed day of exploration, with plenty of side roads to wander and discover. Keep an eye out for wildlife and seasonal wildflowers, and consider taking a short hike to one of the nearby waterfalls tucked into the coulees. There are also opportunities for dispersed camping throughout the area, making it easy to turn a simple trail run into an overnight adventure. Overall, Colockum is a scenic, low-stress destination that’s well-suited for beginners looking to build confidence while enjoying classic Central Washington views.
