Graves Mountain Road

Trail Overview

This trail travels in the Colville National Forest to the top of Graves Mountain, where the old lookout used to be. The trail starts off as an easy gravel road, then transitions to dirt and gets narrow. The trail is two-track in some places, and there are portions where it becomes a shelf road with large drop-offs. The trail has ruts and wash under a foot deep, and near the top, before the last switchback, there is a mud hole over a foot deep. In many places, there is no room to pass, so watch for other vehicles and for wide places to pull off. Near the top, the forest was burned in an old fire, and the fallen trees are taking the trail over. The views are amazing along this trail, seeing burned and live forest, ridges and peaks, and for miles in the distance. High clearance 4x4 is recommended for this trail, along with all needed supplies such as spares and fluids. From the start of the trail, you are approximately 20 minutes from Kettle Falls, Washington, which is the closest services and supplies. Cell phone service was not great, so you may want to download the offline map and have a satellite communications device.

Difficulty

This road starts as an easy gravel road, then transitions to dirt. The trail is a shelf road and off camber in some spots, and climbs around 2,000 feet in elevation and becomes a narrow, one-lane, two-track with no room to pass. There is a large mud hole near the top that was approximately 18 inches deep.
