Fourth of July Mountain

Fourth of July Mountain is a scenic gravel and dirt route through the Colville National Forest that offers offroaders an easy, relaxing drive with beautiful mountain vistas. Suitable for high-clearance vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs, this route winds through dense forest and across ridges near Calispell Peak, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those seeking a peaceful scenic tour. The drive utilizes well-maintained Forest Service roads, though seasonal weather can introduce muddy stretches and washouts that require extra caution. Traversing the area between Chewelah and the high peaks, the route provides spectacular views of the surrounding Iron Mountains, including Wilson Mountain and Little Calispell Peak. Drivers will find plenty of opportunities for dispersed camping, wildlife viewing, and side trips to nearby hiking trails along the way. While generally passable in a standard four-wheel-drive vehicle during dry summer and fall months, winter snowpack and spring runoff can make sections impassable or significantly more challenging.
