Trail Overview

This is a short but scenic out-and-back trail into the edge of the Olympic Range, ending just outside the Buckhorn Wilderness area. Drop from the main road on a steep, slick, rutted path, winding sharply down the canyon wall to a bridge across the Gray Wolf River. The lower portion of the trail follows the rushing river, passing several campsites before climbing up Three O'Clock Ridge to picturesque views of Mount Deception rising in the distance. Winter will see you into deep snowpack beyond this point; air down and continue to meet up with the Upper Dungeness Fork at another patch of pristine rapids. The road continues further to the Tubal Cain trailhead, but dead-ends into the Buckhorn Wilderness shortly after.

Difficulty

The initial descent is deeply rutted with some off-camber sections. The latter sections are evenly graded but badly potholed. Winter snow increases the difficulty.

Road closed just past the turn off for the campground. Parked my truck at the campground and walked with the dogs for a bit up the road. Someone drove around the sign, blasted past the dogs and I. About another 1/4 mile later, forest ranger had them pulled over and was writing them a citation. Didn’t want to interrupt to ask why the closure.

Why this trail is rated 4/10? Can anyone answer me? It's just a road for hikers. Should be green! Who ever sets the rating please change it to easy!

There are some beautiful views about 2/3 in. This road was graded, but with small scattered potholes when we were there and can be done in a car.

Drove this to get to the hiking TH at the end. Regular FS road, sedan friendly. Some pullouts for camping options along the way.

This is an easy trail to drive. Gravel with some washboard. It’s way easier than a 4. Sedans ware parked at the top. However the walking trail system next to if was outstanding. Giant pine canopy with fern undergrowth. There’re a bunch of forest service roads in the area that are more changing. Some level 4. Some easy, some closed.

Super easy trail, lots of hikers. Not very many lookout points but lots of shooting backstops. It’s only a 2 because the road narrows down to 1 vehicle in sections. Don’t expect too much fun. Subaru Legacy could’ve made the whole trail on street tires.

Scenic, and not very technical, more like a 2 then a 4, at least when we went. There were a few crossover vehicles and a sprinter van also along the trail. Steepest part is the beginning, about a 10 degree grade down. No water crossing. One part of the trail had a small rock in the middle, but it was clearly marked.
