Trail Overview

Virginia Highland Horse Trail is a single-track, multiuse trail in Jefferson National Forest, accessed from Camp Road (FS 16) on the eastern side and Hale Lake Road (FS 798) on the western side. The trail is open to motorcycles from October 1 through April 1, so plan accordingly. This section begins with a quick climb off Camp Road, followed by a gradual descent that follows the contours of the ridgeside. There is one creek crossing via a bridge. The bridge surface may be slippery when wet or covered with leaves, so use caution. This section is wider and was likely once an access road or old logging road. There are some ruts and rollers to keep things interesting. There are also numerous turns and the occasional downed tree.
