Trail Overview
Tillman is an easy, scenic 5.5-mile forest road in George Washington National Forest, perfect for beginners, passenger vehicles, and those seeking quick access to prime Appalachian outdoor recreation. This well-maintained gravel route, also known as Forest Road 101, winds through a lush mountain landscape with minimal elevation changes, climbing from about 1,572 feet to a maximum of 2,016 feet. Because of its smooth surface, any standard two-wheel-drive vehicle can easily navigate the entire length of the road without encountering major obstacles, mud, or off-road hazards. Along the drive, travelers will find several well-established parking areas serving popular hiking trailheads, making it an excellent hub for exploring the surrounding ridges on foot.
In addition to hiking, the surrounding area features reservoirs such as Hearthstone Lake and Todd Lake, which offer excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing close to the road. Dispersed camping spots are scattered along the route, providing quiet, primitive sites for overnight stays amidst the dense forest canopy. The route connects multiple other Forest Service roads to a state highway, serving as a reliable connector for SxSs, dual-sport motorcycles, and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts looking to link together longer trail networks in the region. Cell service is spotty to non-existent throughout the canyon, so downloading offline maps prior to departure is highly recommended for navigation.
