Trail Overview
Leading Ridge is an approachable and scenic 3.5-mile seasonal route perfect for beginners, overland enthusiasts, and families looking to explore the George Washington National Forest. Connecting North River to the Todd Lake Recreation Area, this point-to-point dirt road offers a peaceful drive through dense forest with minimal technical difficulty, making it accessible to stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs. The natural dirt surface features occasional gravel maintenance where needed to keep erosion at bay, though drivers should be prepared for minor ruts, mud puddles, and small branches after rain. Climbing from a minimum elevation of 1,961 feet to a peak of 2,511 feet, the trail accumulates about 646 feet of elevation gain along its gentle grade, making for an easy, low-stress mountain drive with a technical rating of 2.
