Trail Overview

This is a challenging and scenic out-and-back USFS trail that rewards those willing to venture beyond the well-maintained sections. The first two miles are on a reasonably maintained road, and all vehicles should be able to comfortably reach the seasonal gate. The gate is currently open from August through January and also provides access to an Appalachian Trail shelter. Beyond the seasonal gate, the trail changes significantly and is best suited for high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The road becomes narrow, overgrown, and much less traveled as it follows Flattop Ridge at approximately 2,520 feet. There are very few places to pull over, so encountering another vehicle can make navigating this section difficult. I would strongly recommend carrying trail-clearing tools, especially after storms or during periods of heavy growth. The limited number of turnarounds also makes backing up or reversing a considerable challenge. The trail eventually reaches the Blue Ridge Parkway, where a gate currently prevents through traffic. There is plenty of room to turn around at the Parkway. While the trail may be rough and overgrown, the views become especially rewarding after the leaves change and fall. With the combination of solitude, mountain scenery, and the adventure of reaching the Parkway, this is a worthwhile trip for drivers who have the right vehicle and are prepared for the conditions.
