Trail Overview
Cow Camp Road is an inviting mountain route in the George Washington National Forest that offers offroaders of all skill levels a gentle climb through scenic hardwood forests and quick access to famous Blue Ridge hiking trails. Spanning approximately 3.4 miles, this unpaved forest road ascends the slopes of Buck Mountain, rising from 2,063 feet to an elevation of 3,338 feet. With a cumulative elevation gain of 1,342 feet, the trail serves as an excellent introduction to forest driving, making it suitable for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, all-wheel-drive crossovers, and SxSs looking for a relaxed mountain cruise.
With a technical rating of 2, the road is primarily composed of gravel and dirt, though it can become rocky and rutted after heavy rains or snowmelt. Drivers may encounter occasional shallow water crossings, small washouts, and minor obstacles under 12 inches along the one-to-two-vehicle-wide corridor. The trail connects Highway 60 to Wiggins Hill Road near Oronoco, providing key access to high-country destinations like Cowcamp Gap and Cole Mountain. Because the route is not regularly maintained in winter, seasonal weather can quickly alter trail conditions, making a cautious approach and basic trail awareness essential for a safe journey.
