Trail Overview

Bobblets Gap is a natural surface two-track that starts on the south side of the Blue Ridge near Montvale, Virginia, and traverses up the mountain. At the top, it goes under the Blue Ridge Parkway and back off the north side of the mountain range, where it intersects with the Appalachian Trail and a few other foot and horse trails. The northern terminus is near Buchanan, Virginia. While not technically difficult, the trail is narrow, often with a drop-off a few feet from the tracks, and with a few scattered spots wide enough for vehicles to pass. No campsites are available along the route. Cell service is spotty at best.

Difficulty

Outside of a few spots that are washed and a couple of berms, this would be a 1. Any high-clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle with some clearance should have no issues.

Very nice drive. A few muddy spots on the trail otherwise in good condition. The winter views are beautiful.

Went from south end and exited north. Very nice peaceful drive. Nothing really challenging or hard. Tight in some spaces but probably just due from time of year. So expect some pinstriping.

Back open! Down trees had been cleared. Lots of low hanging branches though, you will get some minor scratches on side and roof of vehicle. My cherokee with 3" lift and 29" tires went over it just fine. A few of the water management berms were close to scraping but we cleared. The trail is great for anyone wanting to get on a "trail" and not a gravel road. Would be very scenic in the fall. Not many places to pass anyone but luckily is traffic levels are very low - we saw no one. Started on the Montvale side and then had lunch in Buchanan. Can't wait to do it again.

Trail was covered in leaves so it was difficult to see exactly what we were driving over, but was fine just taking it slow. Some flatter rocks (no more than 12”) that tilted the Jeep towards the steep incline which added some thrill - they were easy to drive over. There were a few areas with deep mudded ruts but no issues getting through. My Sport S has stock tires and no lift so we scraped the bottom 3 times when going over the humps; no damage but something to be aware of. Trail is skinny in most spots with steep drop offs so not a lot of room to go around obstacles or miss tree branches. Overall an adrenaline rush for our first off-road adventure.. so much fun!

Pretty easy trail, one or two spots that a low clearance vehicle might scrape on. It's a single track road with steep drop offs on the sides in places, and a few pull off's but they are spaced out, with a few of them big enough for a couple vehicles to stop and take a break if you wanted to. It took us about an hour to do it including the stops for pictures.
