Big Mountain

Big Mountain is accessed from U.S. 460 just outside Blacksburg and follows a U.S. Forest Service road into the surrounding mountain area. At this time, the trail is an out-and-back route that ends at a closed Forest Service gate. At the end of the trail, there is a large cul-de-sac turnaround with a somewhat established fire pit, making dispersed camping a possible option for those looking to spend more time in the area. The trail maintains a mostly consistent uphill grade from U.S. 460 and is primarily composed of hard-packed gravel with few major obstacles. Several hiking trailheads are located along the route, and the amount of foot traffic suggests that this is a popular destination for local hikers. Scenic views of the surrounding mountains can be seen through the trees, with visibility likely improving as the leaves change colors or fall.
