Trail Overview

West Canyon Trailhead Road is a scenic, beginner-friendly route perfect for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes looking for easy access to the Stansbury Mountains and spectacular views of the Tooele Valley. Spanning approximately 4.8 miles, this unpaved road climbs gently from Highway 138, gaining over 1,600 feet of elevation as it ascends toward the West Canyon Trailhead on the edge of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The trail is primarily a wide, graded dirt and gravel road suitable for high-clearance vehicles, though a standard passenger car can manage it during dry summer months. As travelers climb higher, the panoramic vistas of the opposing Oquirrh Mountain range and the sprawling valley below become increasingly dramatic. Rated as a highly accessible trail, the route is straightforward with minimal obstacles other than a few standard cattle guards. However, weather can quickly change the driving conditions; spring thaws and heavy summer rains can leave sections muddy, while winter storms bring deep snow and challenging drifts that make the road impassable for standard vehicles. The road traverses segments of private property before officially entering public forest land, making it crucial to stay on the main designated track. Whether serving as a gateway for hiking deep into West Canyon or as a quick scenic drive, this trail offers a reliable and beautiful mountain escape.

Difficulty

Can be muddy in the spring thaw and after a good rain. Snow and snow drifts can make the easy road difficult to travel. There are a few cattle guards that you'll have to go over but not an issue.

It’s a good little Sunday drive road. It’s more suited for people headed up to higher elevations and trails to ride dirt bikes or SXS OHVs. Good view over Grantsville, Tooele, and towards Eagle Mountain.
