Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This short sandy two-track circles around Ghost Rock and leads to the remains of Warrior Cabin, an old homestead site slowly fading back into the landscape. The trail is sandy the entire way and generally easy to follow, though hidden ruts in the tall grass and a few washouts can create a bumpier ride than expected. Along the route, you will pass through an old cattle gate and travel through quiet desert scenery tucked behind sandstone formations. At the end, the remains of Warrior Cabin sit near the base of the cliffs, offering a thoughtful glimpse into a forgotten chapter of life in this remote country. Taking time to walk the site often leaves visitors imagining what life must have been like here.
Difficulty
This trail is generally easy, consisting mostly of a sandy base with a few washouts and hidden ruts in the grass that can create a rougher ride. In dry conditions, most stock high clearance SUVs and 4WD vehicles should have no trouble. The soft sand may challenge 2WD vehicles depending on tire choice and momentum, especially when hot and loose. There are no major rock obstacles, steep climbs, or technical sections.
History
The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
