Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This short route offers a unique opportunity to drive directly along the historic grade of the Spirit Railroad, a project that began in the early 1880s but was never completed. As you follow the trail, you'll notice subtle but unmistakable signs of the railroad's construction--raised embankments, cut sections through the terrain, and stretches where the land was carefully built up to support what would have been a narrow-gauge line. Despite never seeing rails laid, much of the grade was completed across Buckhorn Flat and Cottonwood Wash before the project was ultimately abandoned. Today, the route feels quiet and remote, but it once represented a massive effort involving hundreds of workers attempting to carve a railroad through one of Utah's most rugged landscapes. Driving it now gives you a direct connection to that unfinished vision, where the engineering effort remains visible even without a single piece of track ever being installed.

Difficulty
Most of the challenge comes from occasional rough patches, shallow washouts, and sandy sections rather than any true obstacles. A stock high clearance 4x4 is more than sufficient. This is a great route for beginners or anyone looking to mix light off-roading with strong historical value rather than technical driving.
History
The route follows the unfinished grade of the Spirit Railroad, a narrow-gauge line initiated in 1881 by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. The goal was to create a route through the San Rafael Swell, connecting Green River to central Utah resources, but the project was abandoned before rails were ever laid. Despite never being completed, crews had already invested significant effort into shaping the landscape. Sections of raised embankment and cut grade are still visible today, especially across Buckhorn Flat and nearby washes. These remnants are some of the only evidence left of a short-lived but ambitious attempt to push rail infrastructure through one of Utah's most rugged and remote regions. What remains today isn't a railroad, but the groundwork of one, offering a rare chance to drive directly along a piece of industrial history that never fully came to life.
