Trail Overview

This unique connector route offers one of the most unusual driving experiences in the San Rafael Swell, passing beneath Interstate 70 in a landscape that feels completely removed from modern traffic above. The route begins fairly well-maintained and level, but quickly becomes a rougher desert track filled with bumps, soft dirt, and frequent washouts. Many of the washouts are deep enough to damage a vehicle if hit at higher speeds, and some are large enough to require driving around them entirely. Use caution, as several washouts can appear suddenly. Two tunnels under I-70 provide passage for travelers, though they can feel tight for wider or longer-wheelbase vehicles and add to the adventure. These tunnels are only one vehicle wide if you are driving anything larger than an ATV or dirt bike. Along the 6.5-mile route, travelers are rewarded with wide-open desert scenery, distant mesas, and the strange contrast of remote backcountry terrain beside a major interstate.

Difficulty

The route starts easy on maintained gravel but becomes rougher with soft dirt, bumps, and numerous deep washouts. Most hazards can be bypassed, but careful driving and attention are required because some washouts appear suddenly and are large enough to trap or damage a vehicle. Suitable for dirt bikes, ATVs, SxS, high clearance 4x4, and full-width 4x., 4WD is recommended after rain or in very soft conditions. Main challenge is terrain awareness rather than technical obstacles.

History

While modern Interstate 70 dominates the skyline above, this route highlights the contrast between today's highway travel and the older backcountry routes that once connected remote desert country. It now serves as a creative and memorable overland link through the San Rafael Swell.
