Trail Overview

Located in the Buckmaster Mining District, this short but rewarding route combines history, light adventure, and outstanding scenery in the heart of the San Rafael Swell. The route begins right off of Interstate 70 in the flat of the desert and then begins climbing a graded hill on a rocky dirt track, gaining elevation quickly as the landscape opens around you. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of an old mining structure, a reminder of the hard work and determination of those who once searched these hills for mineral wealth. As the route continues, it winds through weathered sandstone and broken rock formations, carving its way across the hillside. The destination is a dramatic overlook high above Interstate 70, where modern travel below contrasts sharply with the surrounding rugged terrain and mining history. This is a great quick route for photography, sunset views, and anyone wanting a taste of the Swell’s past without a long technical trail.
