Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This route serves as a scenic connector between Salt Valley Gorge and Long Valley while delivering a more interesting drive than a standard backroad. As the trail approaches Long Valley, it begins carving between impressive rock formations that create a narrower and more dramatic feel. Several washes cross the route along the way, adding changes in terrain and requiring drivers to watch for sudden dips or softer sections. One of the more notable features drops directly into a dry creek bed before climbing back out, giving the trail a bit more character and requiring careful speed control. In dry conditions, the route is generally manageable, but when wet, the sandy surface can become extremely slick and unstable, almost like driving on ice. This area is also active ranchland, so remain alert for cows, gates, and livestock on the road. Between the scenery, washes, and changing conditions, this route offers a fun and practical connection through open desert country.

Difficulty

This route is generally manageable in dry conditions, but several wash crossings, a drop into a dry creek bed, and changing sandy surfaces add moderate challenge. Wet conditions can raise the difficulty quickly, as the sand may become extremely slick and reduce traction significantly.
