Trail Overview

The Pony Express Trail from Vernon to Simpson Springs is an approachable, history-rich dirt and gravel road perfect for beginner offroaders, overland enthusiasts, and families looking to explore Utah's vast West Desert. Following the historic path of the 1860s mail service, this graded route transitions from paved highway in Vernon to a wide, well-maintained gravel road that climbs over Lookout Pass. The drive offers sweeping views of the surrounding Sheeprock and Onaqui mountain ranges, making it an excellent scenic route for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, SxSs, and dual-sport motorcycles. While generally easy and rated a 3 out of 10, the unpaved surface can become heavily washboarded, dusty, and incredibly slick when wet, requiring careful driving after rainstorms or during snowmelt. As the trail winds westward, travelers will pass through the territory of the famous Onaqui wild horse herd, where bands of horses are frequently spotted grazing near the roadway. The route culminates at the historic Simpson Springs site, which features a reconstructed Pony Express cabin, interpretive displays, and a Bureau of Land Management campground equipped with campsites, restrooms, and seasonal water. Because this remote desert environment experiences extreme summer heat and freezing winter conditions, late spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to visit. Visitors should prepare by packing extra water, fuel, and supplies, as cell service is highly unreliable throughout this vast desert corridor.

The Pony Express trail was better than I expected. The trail is in great shape, well graded and non technical. Plenty of side trails to explore and camp. Sunset was absolutely stunning. There were pockets of crowds camping, but plenty of space to find solitude. What a gem so close to SLC.
